Abstract
BACKGROUND: The beginning and crucial step for the infection prevention and control is the knowledge of the antibiotic resistance pattern on each facility and community. However, day by day, enormous microbiologic data has been pouring and surveillance of hospital infection and monitoring of antibiotic-resistance is a time-consuming and laboring activity. To overcome this problem, we have developed a computerized antibiotic-resistance monitoring system.

METHODS: Since 1997, all information pertaining to patients has been collected and stored in the Asan Medical Open Report System (AMOS). Using Data-Warehousing system, all information stored in AMOS was grouped as three main subjects: 1) hospital visit history 2) prescription and 3) laboratory results. As an On-Line Analytical processing (OLAP) tool, Business Objects (B.O., France) was used.

RESULTS: Following categories were programmed and applied in infection control activity; 1) microbial culture results 2) trends of antibiotic-resistance pattern 3) frequency of major antibiotic-resistant organism in clinical isolates 4) trends of antibiotic usage based on defined-daily dosage, and 5) daily patients list, who were prescribed glycopeptides or carbapenems.

CONCLUSION: This program could be an important model for the infection prevention and control.
